New CF&P "Economics 101" Video
Calls for Repeal of Obamacare

(Washington, D.C., Monday, July 12, 2010) In the latest "Economics 101" video released today by the Center for Freedom and Prosperity Foundation (CF&P), Eline van den Broek of the European Independent Institute says that repealing Obamacare is just the first of many steps that are needed to fix American health care. Entitled "Repealing Obamacare and Restoring a Free Market in Healthcare," this new CF&P foundation video explains how various government policies cause the third-party payer system that distorts the health care market.

Rather than addressing this problem, the passage of Obamacare makes this bad situation even worse. Drawing on her experience with recent Dutch health care reforms, van den Broek explains how insurance subsidies exacerbate the third-party payer problem. Meanwhile, the evidence shows that reducing government intervention is the only viable solution to our health care woes.

"The passage of Obamacare was an unfortunate turn in the wrong direction," said CF&P Foundation President Andrew Quinlan.  He continued, "Politicians seem to think that more government involvement will solve the problems caused by the government intervention that already exists."

"The only silver lining to the Obamacare debacle is that government intervention already had created such a mess that the new legislation is a relatively small additional step in the wrong direction," added Dan Mitchell of the Cato Institute, who added, "unfortunately, we can count on future politicians using the added mess it will create as an excuse for yet more destructive government intervention."

Executive Summary

Government programs and intervention were making a mess of the healthcare system, even before Obamacare was enacted. Repealing Obamacare is a good idea and will prevent a bad situation from becoming worse. This video explains, however, that repeal is just the first step if we want to genuinely restore a free market and create an efficient and cost-effective healthcare system,

This new video is part of CF&P's Economics 101 video series, which is designed to explain free market concepts, with particular emphasis on reaching students and young people. This is the eighth video in the series.

The other Econ 101 videos: The The Job-Killing Impact of Minimum Wage Laws; Deficits, Debts and Unfunded Liabilities; Cost of the Internal Revenue Code; Lessons Learned From Sweden; Government Monopolies; Moral Hazard; and Don't Copy Europe's Mistakes.
