CFP Takes Tax Battle to Heart of Enemy Territory, Releases Strategy Memo for Paris Task Force Meeting PDF Version
Washington, DC (February 26) – The Center for Freedom and Prosperity today announced that it is bringing a delegation to Paris to help low-tax countries resist the OECD's assault
on tax competition.
While in the city that serves as headquarters for the OECD, the Center will be hosting a public forum on the issue, with special focus on territorial taxation, financial privacy, and fiscal sovereignty.
The delegation will include Andrew Quinlan, President of the Center, Veronique de Rugy, a George Mason University Research Fellow and member of the Center's Board, and David Burton, a partner with the Argus Group and former head of tax policy for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Quinlan said the Center hopes to convince the OECD to withdraw its misguided attack on low-tax countries, stating, "It is increasingly clear that the new Administration in America recognizes that tax competition should be celebrated rather than persecuted. As such, the OECD's effort to create a tax cartel for the benefit of high-tax nations is doomed to failure."
Ms. de Rugy, meanwhile, opined that it was important to confront the OECD in its backyard: "As a French citizen, I am fully aware of the narrow, protectionist mentality that dominates economic thinking in Paris." She also noted that "Tax competition is desperately needed to rescue French taxpayers from an oppressive tax system."
The Center also release a strategic memorandum it sent to the low-tax countries participating in the Paris task force meeting between OECD and non-OECD nations.
The memo discusses the OECD's bad faith behavior and highlights several points that should be raised at the March 1-2 task force meeting.
The Center for Freedom and Prosperity's forum, which is open to the press and the general public, will take place Wednesday, February 28, at 4:00, at the Offices of IES, a French think-tank, located at 35 Avenue Mac-Mahon, 75017 Paris, France (Tel: 011 33 1 43 80 85 17)
